Number
of members: It depends. The number changes regularly, but
most reports put total membership at 5,000 to 5,375.
How's
it set up?: There are 13 branches of the academy. The largest
is actors, who make up about 60 percent of the group (or 3,000).
Other branches include directors, cinematographers, producers,
sound technicians, editors, executives and musicians.
How
old are they?: They're not spring chickens. Nearly everyone
agrees that the average age is higher than 40.
Any
other identifiers?: Yep. Most of them are men. And the vast
majority, up to 95 percent, are white. Various reports put black
membership at 3 percent to 4 percent. That doesn't leave much
for anyone else.
How
can you became a member:? Generally, people who have worked
five to eight years in the movie business. Each nominee needs
to be sponsored by two other members. Oscar nominees are automatically
considered for membership in the following year.
Who
decides on members?: The executive committee for each of the
13 branches votes on members. Then final approval comes from a
39-member board of governors.
Who
gets to vote for the Oscars?: It depends on the category.
The academy membership at large votes on best-picture nominees.
But directing, acting, screenwriting and other categories are
determined by the individual branches.
