Inside the Academy

Few organizations maintain as much secrecy as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, especially when it comes to membership. But here's a glance at what can be determined, based on various reports.

Number of members: It depends. The number changes regularly, but most reports put total membership at 5,000 to 5,375.

How's it set up?: There are 13 branches of the academy. The largest is actors, who make up about 60 percent of the group (or 3,000). Other branches include directors, cinematographers, producers, sound technicians, editors, executives and musicians.

How old are they?: They're not spring chickens. Nearly everyone agrees that the average age is higher than 40.

Any other identifiers?: Yep. Most of them are men. And the vast majority, up to 95 percent, are white. Various reports put black membership at 3 percent to 4 percent. That doesn't leave much for anyone else.

How can you became a member:? Generally, people who have worked five to eight years in the movie business. Each nominee needs to be sponsored by two other members. Oscar nominees are automatically considered for membership in the following year.

Who decides on members?: The executive committee for each of the 13 branches votes on members. Then final approval comes from a 39-member board of governors.

Who gets to vote for the Oscars?: It depends on the category. The academy membership at large votes on best-picture nominees. But directing, acting, screenwriting and other categories are determined by the individual branches.
